He’d thought he was over her.
For more than a year now, Julian had struggled with his feelings for one of his closest friends. Being around her almost every day didn’t exactly help, but so far, he thought, he’d been doing an excellent job of hiding things – even from himself. As far as he knew, only one other person had any idea just how much he really cared for Persephone Lovegood.
This development had come as something of a surprise to Julian. The Lovegoods were old family friends, after all, and he’d known Persephone and her older sister for years. Julian had always liked the Lovegood girls, especially Persephone, but if anyone suggested he was in serious danger of falling in love with her, he would have told that person he’d never even considered her in any romantic sense. That was, until he was fifteen. He wasn’t even sure exactly what had changed. Perhaps it had been happening gradually for a while by then, and it had just taken him a while to figure it out.
Once he’d realized he was falling for her, it was much too late to say anything. Persephone had a boyfriend who seemed to make her genuinely happy. Not wanting it to become painful to be around her, Julian fought hard to keep from falling completely in love with her. He hadn’t won that battle; not entirely, but he did meet another girl. He’d genuinely cared for her; it had been her decision to leave him, and it had hurt. But through it all, he’d never really stopped lo—no, he told himself firmly, he was not in love with Persephone. Admitting that to himself in so many words would have seemed too irrevocable.
Yes, she was single now – they both were, at the same time, for the first time in many years… but it was obvious Persephone hadn’t gotten over Iasan. As much as he thought Iasan was completely wrong for her, it wouldn’t do anyone any good to say so. Nor was now the time to tell her how he felt about her. Best case scenario, maybe he’d be the ‘rebound guy’, but that was not what Julian wanted.
And so, right now, he was waiting to meet her at what could have been a very romantic spot, but only to catch up, as friends, because they hadn’t seen each other outside of their group’s weekly study sessions for quite some time now. He just hoped she wouldn’t want to talk about Iasan.
